A note on pedestals

Site hoardings are odd things. They sometimes consist of galvanized fences chained together around a site, upon which are sometimes hung signs and whatnot, but you can peer in through them at the work proceeding. More often the site hoarding is made up of seven-foot-high panels of timber where advertising space is rented out. It is difficult to see over them.

When the hoarding around our site was dismantled, and our building, at last, directly addressed the public footpaths and roads surrounding us, it was as if a pedestal that had held the building site aloft had been collapsed, removed, and the small secrets of the site’s brief life were laid bare too. It occurred to me as we did this that the finished building seemed less and less the point of the building site. The completed building was merely the building site’s exhaust.
